Can You Really Earn More Money By Changing Your Style? Actually, You Can

We all know the phrase "dress for success". But does it really holds its ground? It turns out that this statement is much more than just a catchy saying.

Recent studies demonstrated that wearing nice outfits can influence how people perceive you, how confident you're feeling, and even affect your salary!

New research showed that it takes five seconds (instead of previously seven) for another person to form an opinion about you.

This implies that whether you're at a meeting, job interview, or some networking event, you've got only several seconds to form a good first impression and present yourself as the person you aspire to be.

A study conducted by Columbia Business School confirmed that well-dressed men feel more confident, powerful, and are more focused on details. Moreover, other people see stylish people as leaders and follow their suggestions at larger rates than those who are not dressed as good.

Dress for Success (and Maybe Even a Raise)

If you're still not impressed by the power of style here are more astonishing facts I collected for you:

  • Very attractive people earn 22% more than their average-looking peers. (Research in Social Stratification and Mobility, 2016)
  • Attractive people are 72.32% more likely to be called back for a second interview. (Statistic Brain, 2016)
  • For 95% of employers surveyed, personal appearance is a contributing factor when determining whether an applicant is suitable for the job. (Forbes, 2015)
  • 93% of executives said that an employee’s style of clothes influences his chances of getting promoted. (Washington Post, 2015)
  • Of 501 hiring managers surveyed, 75% said wearing the wrong clothes is the number one mistake millennials make. (Forbes, 2012)
  • There’s about a 10 to 15% difference in earnings between the most and least attractive employees in a group. (Cornell University, 2011)

What does it mean for you? Well, your spending on proper attire is actually worth it.

Let me break this. Here are five more reasons why you should revamp your closet this year.

#1. Show Your Authority

When you dress well you're showing self-respect for yourself. This makes other respect you and treats you better. A good choice of clothes shows that you're a reliable and trustworthy person.

What happens when people trust you?

They see you as a leader and a person who has the solutions. If you're in a situation where you need to convince someone and show that you're a "boss" here - dress well!

#2. Look More Competent

There was a study - in which people judged different photos of men who:

  • wore either a suit or a sweat-shirt together with track pants
  • held "cool", "neutral" or "weak" poses

Well, it turned out that men in suits were perceived to be more competent than those in casual wear. "Cool" and "neutral" poses were also linked with competence. But when suit and "neutral" pose were combined the results were significantly better.

To create such an impression you should think about your behavior, listen well, ask intelligent questions and look like you have all the answers.

#3. Elevate Negotiating Skills

There was research conducted by the University of Illinois and UC-San Francisco that proved the effects of formal attire on negotiating. They invited 128 men to play the role either of a "seller" or a "buyer" of a hypothetical factory. Participants were randomly given an outfit to wear (from formal to casual). The purpose was to negotiate a price in 6 minutes.

I won't go deep into the study but I want to point main outcomes:

  • Participants who wore formal clothing obtained significantly higher profits
  • Casual-dressed men made more concessions than those in formal clothing
  • When the person was negotiating with someone informal clothes, he felt less powerful

So, keep this in mind for any future negotiations.

#4. Become More Memorable

I spoke about making a good first impression. But let's not forget about the value of a long-lasting one. You may be silent during the meeting; however, your attention to outfit and details can create a big impact on those who are in the room.

Remember one thing: your outfit speaks volumes about who you are. And it can help you to create a lasting impression after the meeting is over.

#5. Gain Self-Confidence

Nearly 77% of Americans confess their wardrobe needs a makeover. This means that you're not satisfied with your appearance the majority of the time. This without a doubt affects your confidence and self-esteem.

When you dress sharp you automatically feel better about yourself. You get attention, compliments, and interest in your personality. Moreover, you start taking action to improve your life.

Why?

Because when you dress up you're actually taking the benefits and manners of that social class, regardless of how wealthy you actually are.

Just figuring out your style removes the stress from this part of your life and helps you to focus on other important things.

Almost half of Americans say they would dress better if they simply know how how to do it

If you're feeling the same it's an easy fix.
