But after binge-watching hundreds of these videos, I finally decided to take control of my hair journey.
And guess what? I've got an awesome DIY hair growth oil recipe that I'm dying to share with you guys! It's super simple and easy to make, and the best part is that it'll only set you back about $35. So, let's get ready to kick our hair woes to the curb and start growing those luscious locks!
Why Essential Oils for Hair Growth?
If you think of your scalp as a garden, it needs nutrients to nourish your hair and help it grow thicker and stronger. And that's exactly where essential oils come in handy!
Research has shown that certain essential oils can work wonders in improving hair growth and thickness. For instance, a 2014 study published in the Journal of the Korean Academy of Nursing revealed that a blend of cedarwood, lavender, rosemary, and thyme essential oils was effective in treating alopecia areata, a condition that causes hair loss. Another study published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment in 2016 demonstrated that a combination of peppermint and jojoba oils improved hair thickness, hair count, and hair growth rate in just four weeks.
So, if you're keen to give essential oils a try, here's how to do it right: make sure to dilute them in a carrier oil such as almond, jojoba, or coconut oil before applying them to your hair and scalp. This will help prevent irritation and ensure that your hair gets all the nourishing benefits of the essential oils. Now, let's more to the hair oil recipe!
The Best Hair Growth Oil Recipe
So, I like to keep things simple and for the first option, you just need a carrier oil and 3 essential oils. I like to mix up a small portion for each use, but you can also mix them all in one bottle to use multiple times.
Ingredients:
- Carrier oil. I use almond or jojoba because they don't have an overpowering smell
- Rosemary oil
- Lavender oil
- Peppermint oil
Proportions:
It all depends on your hair length and thickness. For one usage the good rule of thumb is to have 10 ml (two teaspoons) of carrier oil and add 3-4 drops of rosemary oil, 2 drops of lavender, and 2 of peppermint.
Here are the suggested proportions:
for 5ml of carrier oil add 3-5 drops of essential oil
for 30 ml of carrier oil add 12-30 drops of essential oil
for 50 ml of carrier oil add 30-50 drops of essential oil
But why these specific oils, you might ask? Well, rosemary oil has been shown to increase blood circulation to the scalp, which can help stimulate hair growth. Lavender oil is known for its soothing and calming properties, which can promote a healthy scalp. And peppermint oil has a cooling and invigorating effect on the scalp, which can boost blood coming to your hair roots.
So, when you combine these three oils with carrier oil, you get a powerful blend that can nourish and stimulate your scalp, promoting healthy hair growth. Give it a try and see the results for yourself!
I also like to add lemongrass, rosehip, and thyme oils but these oils are optional.
How often should you apply this oil blend?
I recommend doing it 1-2 times per week before washing your hair. It is important that you leave it on for at least 1 hour before rinsing it off, but for the best results, I suggest keeping it on overnight.
How to apply it?
Start by massaging your scalp for 5 min with your hands or a scalp massager (which we'll talk about later). Apply the oil across your scalp, moving the dropper from the front to the back of your head, with a focus on the areas that you want to improve. Don't forget to apply oil to the back of your head. Avoid oversaturating your scalp; it shouldn't feel too oily or greasy. Any remaining oil can be gently spread throughout the rest of your hair, focusing on the middle and ends.

How to Boost Your Hair Growth Even More?
To boost your hair growth, it's important to ensure that there is good blood circulation near your roots. To achieve this, I recommend getting yourself a scalp massager. You should massage your scalp for 3-5 minutes before applying your oil blend and then massage for another 5 minutes after.
I personally massage my scalp without oils every single day as part of my morning and evening routine. It gives really pleasant sensations :) Plus, I use the same massager when washing my hair.
Here are some other important rules for hair care:
- Wash with shampoo ONLY your scalp, don't put shampoo on your hair and ends - it can dry out your hair.
- Shampoo your scalp twice, first to remove dirt and the second to nourish your scalp.
- Apply conditioner ONLY to your hair and not on the scalp.
I recommend washing your hair 1-2 times per week. Again, think about your scalp as a garden - you don't want to overwater it or let it dry out. Here are some massagers currently available on iHerb & Amazon:
As I mentioned earlier, I've been struggling with hair loss for a long time, and I'm eager to see the results of using this essential oil blend and scalp massager. I'll be sure to update you all with photos and progress reports every month, so stay tuned!
I hope this post has inspired you to take better care of your hair and try out some new techniques. Remember, a healthy scalp leads to healthy hair, and essential oils and scalp massage can help achieve this. Don't forget to follow the important rules of hair care, like washing your scalp only and not over-washing your hair.
